There are 113 sites listed for their outstanding wildlife experience opportunities in Montana. Six of these are in Phillips County.

These sites offer the visitor a chance to view, photograph, and share in possibly the widest number and variety of wildlife species anywhere in North America.

In and of itself, the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge is over 120 miles long and encompasses over 2,000 square miles, which makes it bigger than Rhode Island and Delaware.

Truly one of the more remarkable best-kept-secrets of the lower 48 states!!

Together with Fort Peck Lake, the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge is made up of native prairie, forested coulees, river bottoms, and bad lands, and provides a home for the worlds largest herd of prairie elk, mule deer, whitetail deer, pronghorn antelope, prairie dogs, coyotes, sharp-tail grouse, sage grouse, and all the usual prairie wildlife.  The elk viewing is second only to Yellowstone!

A car tour route begins just north of the Fred Robinson Bridge south of Malta. It takes the visitors through habitats from ponderosa pines to thick sagebrush and grass land prairie, while offering spectacular views of the Missouri River and the Missouri River Breaks.

Said to be the third largest National Wildlife Refuge the Refuge is open for public big game and upland bird hunting. For more information contact the CMR Refuge office in Lewistown

Pelicans! Yes, a flock of pelicans settled on the shores of a local lake! This area is known for a wide range of wildlife, the likes of which you would never expect, from elk to pelicans, and everything in between!

UL Bend National Wildlife Refuge

the UL Bend National Wildlife Refuge is such a remote refuge, it isprimarily designated wilderness. The extensive prairie dog towns attract coyotes, badgers, eagles, and two endangered species common to Phillips county - the Ferruginous hawk and burrowing owl.  Elk are common, as are sage grouse, and the area offers a unique opportunity to view bighorn sheep at low elevation.

Bowdoin National Wildlife Refuge

One of the premier bird watching sites in the country can be found at the Bowdoin National Wildlife Refuge. Managed for waterfowl primarily, it is home to 240 different species of birds. Many ducks and geese nest at Bowdoin and the photographic opportunities are  unsurpassed.  In addition,  deer and antelope are common sights from the one hour auto tour.  In the spring of 1992,  sixty-six bald eagles were seen together at one time on the refuge.  For more information contact the Bowdoin Refuge office in Malta.

Bitter Creek

This area combines some of Montana's finest prairie Mule deer and antelope are abundant as are sharp-tail grouse, sage grouse, and prairie dogs.  Once again the prairie dogs.  Once again the prairie dog towns attract predators and raptors, in particular, prairie falcons, ferruginous hawks and golden eagles can be seen.

Hunting is possible throughout the region and interested parties should contact the chamber of commerce for lists of  areas, maps, and outfitters.  Regulations and season information can be obtained from the Department of  Fish and Wildlife and Parks in Helena!!
