  • Head north towards Roundup, MT leaving Billings on US Highway 87. In Roundup (45 miles), turn left at Main Street and continue north on US 87 to Grass Range (45 miles). Continue north on MT 19 to the junction commonly known as Bohemian Corner (21.5 miles). Continue straight onto US Highway 191 into Malta (90 miles).

  • Head northeast on US Highway 87 towards Havre, MT (113 miles). Turn east onto US Highway 2 and continue east to Malta (89 miles).
  • NOTE: You will travel through the communities of Chinook and Harlem which both have full services. The community of Dodson, just 18 miles from Malta, has a small store that serves great lunches and/or dessert and coffee.

  • The Malta Depot is an unmanned Amtrak Station opening one hour before and after each train departs. The station features an enclosed seating area and restrooms.
  • There is no ticket agent on-site, however, you can purchase tickets locally through Gina at the Travel Haven - (406) 654-1638. The Travel Haven is located at 121 South 2nd Street East and is within walking distance to the station.
  • NOTE: Malta is a brief stop along the Amtrak route so it is important to be ready when the train arrives. You will be met by a friendly Amtrak official once on board who will help you store your luggage and locate your seat or sleeper car.

The train schedule is as follows:

• Empire Builder #27 or #7: arrives from the east, traveling west towards Havre. Departs Malta at 1:25 p.m.
• Empire Builder #28 or #8: arrives from the west, traveling east towards Glasgow. Departs Malta at 2:52 p.m.
